A Toast to Grandma

A Toast to Grandma

Circa 1997 in Portland, OregonGrandma Norma and me in the foyer of her old house on NE 118th. (She's since moved.) By her grace and goodwill I spent years living in a basement bedroom. She was always making meals for me, and in particular I think in her mind no breakfast was ever complete without some toast (making this photo especially appropriate).

She's cooked me meals, I've lived in her house, I've borrowed her car—Erin and I even stayed in her basement for a few weeks after we were married and were still looking for a place to live. Could a person be more giving? I think not.

The stereotype is that grandparents are supposed to spoil their grandkids. Well, Grandma always lived up to that, and I've been the undeservedly lucky recipient. I hope someday I'm able to spoil my own grandkids which as much enthusiasm. In the meantime, all I can do is to continue to express my appreciation and gratitude to a person who has set the standard. Here's to you, Grandma!
